But it is soooo cute!

March 20, 2007 · 5 Comments

I just ordered one of these from here and I am so excited I could die. I got it on clearance plus I had a gift certificate so it was totally affordable. And it is JUST.SO.CUTE.

I don’t get The Girl a lot of things, and try to remind myself that she will appreciate extra money in the college fund WAY more than some little toy, but this time I had to splurge. Come on, tell me it is cute.

In other way more exciting news, ANITA IS PREGNANT! I am so happy for her I think I might die. Crazy, I know, since I don’t even know her, but … it’s true. Cross all your appendages for her as she’s had some trouble with miscarriages in the past.

That’s all for today, kids.

Musical Interlude

March 15, 2007 · 2 Comments

Inspired by this post of Meg’s, I had to dig out a few favorites.

I love, love, love this song. I love the line about “the whole world fits inside of your arms.” I often think of Blue Sky when I hear it, because he suggested some of The Girl’s favorite music. I also think of Shannon and Krista because they have wee ones about The Girl’s age. Isn’t it funny that I don’t know these people at all and yet some music makes me think of them? It’s a wacky blogging thing, I guess. I am also ALL in favor of waking up slow, Girl or no Girl!

Meg had a link to a Chet Atkins song, and I had to link to my favorite Chet song as well. Chet was such a great guitarist; he is so missed by so many. Bring a tissue to listen to this one.

I sing this song to The Girl every night. It is the last thing she hears before she goes to sleep. I always thought it was a Lyle Lovett song, because that is the only recording I have every heard of the song. Apparently, I had the artist wrong, but I still love the song. (The song starts about 5 minutes in to the clip.) I must admit that I prefer the way Lyle does it, but this is pretty good too.

That’s all I have time for tonight – happy listening!

Good news and bad news …

March 8, 2007 · 5 Comments

The good news is I LOVE my new pediatrician. The bad news is that The Girl is sick.

When we moved here, I got a recommendation for a pediatrician for The Girl’s 12-month check up. We went there and I was unimpressed. The first question they asked me was “is she on formula or cow’s milk?” She seriously seemed surprised when I said that she was nursing.

She asked me if we had turned The Girl’s car seat around yet. I told her we hadn’t because rear-facing car seats are much safer (even after a year and 20 lbs). She had no reply other than “well, you can turn it around any time.” When I told her we co-slept, she told me I needed to get The Girl into her own bed so she could learn to self-sooth!!! (There is absolutely NO medical evidence that this is true, BTW.)

She asked whether my c-section was planned, and I explained that it had been an emergency when The Girl was in distress. She asked for the 1st APGAR score and I told her it was a 4. She told me not to worry about that number too much because it is just a number “lawyers use” – clearly she did not know I was a lawyer, even though she had me fill out approximately 14 million forms.

When it came time for the shots, the nurse wanted me to HOLD THE GIRL DOWN ON THE EXAM TABLE! Maybe this is normal, I don’t know. But, at her doc in ND, The Girl sat on my lap while I gave her a bear hug to hold her arms out of the way, and the nurse gave the shot in the leg. Pinning a baby down to an exam table seems, well, crazy.

Anyway … short story long, we found a new pediatrician who is WONDERFUL! They only accept 4 new patients a month, so I had to call at 8 a.m. on the 1st to get in. Luckily, I made it! The practice is small, just two doctors, but they are affiliated with a major medical facility and are both board certified. They are totally pro-breastfeeding, extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping types who support granola people like me. While I am also very pro-vaccinating kids, if you are not cool with that, they are fine with it too.

I hadn’t planned on going in there until The Girl’s 15 month check, but when she wasn’t shaking this cold, and it sounded like she was wheezing, I decided we should go in. They were amazing. The docs do everything. They come and get your child from the waiting room, and are with them the whole time. They are kind, compassionate, great with kids and just so supportive. I heart them both.

Turned out the girls lungs were fine, but she had a minor ear infection.

EAR INFECTION? But wait, I breastfeed! Breastfed babies don’t get ear infections!!

Of course, that isn’t true. They get fewer, and the doc says that because she had her first one after a year of age, she will probably have very few in her life. Yay!

Now the part that I really love, they did NOT push antibiotics! YAY! He said that most ear infection clear on their own without any medication so we should try that first. If she did not seem better in 24-48 hours, then we’d try antibiotics. This is EXACTLY how I feel about antibiotics. If they are needed, by all means use them; but, if they are not (and they often are not) then let nature take its course.

Anyway … dispite the constant runny nose and horrible cough, The Girl is playing as usual, so I think she is feeling OK.

And even though it rips my heart out anytime I hear her cough, I am doing better too.

Seriously, I need a favor …

March 5, 2007 · 12 Comments

OK, kids, I need some help.

My friend has a little boy in grade school and they are doing a geography project. As part of the project, each kid sent out a letter to one person, requesting that that person send a post card back to the class, and then forward on the letter to someone else, requesting that he or she do the same.

I got this letter just as we were packing up and leaving ND. In an effort to get around the rules, and get my kid’s friends the coolest post cards, I asked one of my blog friends to send a post card to the class, and she agreed. Unfortunately, she has been too busy and has had some serious family issues (like a death in the family) so I don’t want to bug her about this again.

(Honey, if you are reading this I TOTALLY understand and am not mad one speck!)

Anyway, here is what I need: If you are willing to send a post card from your lovely city, town or hamlet, to my friend’s kid’s class, please leave me a comment and I will contact you with the names & address etc.  I would really, really, REALLY appreciate this.

Also, this is real. It is not one of those forward things that you get where some sick kid is collecting post cards. The request came right from the kid to me.

Would anyone be willing to help? Please? Please? PLEASE!!!

I thought I’d see if I could figure out how to upload pictures. What do you think, do you see the cutest little girl in the world, or do you see a big red X? Hopefully you can click on the picture to see a bigger picture. I am now crossing my fingers.

The first cold

March 1, 2007 · 3 Comments

Today is one of those days that I wish I were the kind of mom that could plop my baby in front of the TV for a day. Or stick her in a play pen. Or drug her up with Benedryl.

Just kidding on that last one.

Kind of.

I am sick. I have my first cold since before I was pregnant with The Girl, and it is a doozy.

OK, I started writing that yesterday, but today things got worse. Now The Girl has it too! She has her first fever ever, which I hate. She doesn’t seem to mind it too much though. She’s still playing and smiling, but is more likely to cry if she bonks her head, rather than just shake it off like she normally does.

Of course, the fact that she has a cold is ALL.MY.FAULT., since I had it first. I have to say I am a bit surprised she got sick since I am still bfing ALL THE TIME. Actually, I am glad about this too, since I know it will ensure that she gets plenty of fluids. However, I thought she would have gotten the antibodies quick enough to prevent her from getting sick.

OK, not the most exciting post, but it is a post, none the less! I’ll try to be more exciting later.
